August 12, 2009, BHEL Market, 6 o’clock in the evening: He looked at me… Nope… He looked not at me, but at the sugarcane juice I was drinking. He was probably in his late 70′s. He has a thin body and a wrinkled face. He has no shirt and only a dirt stricken dhoti to cover his whole body. He has no energy to even beg people for money or food. But his eyes were asking for help… His eyes were asking for affection… And, his eyes knew well that he would not get either. I ordered another glass of juice and brought it to him. As soon as I approached him, he grabbed the glass immediately, taking it in his shaking hands, and in no time, he drank the juice. He gave the glass back to me without saying a word. I still remember him… His face… his expressions… his eyes… and his shaking hands.
July 28, 2009, 8.00 AM, ChandaNagar Bus Stop: The wind was blowing heavily and there was a slight drizzle too. The two girls were standing at the footpath and begging as people passed by. Their bodies were slender and their faces indicated that they were hungry. One can easily tell that they are twins by just looking at their faces. Both of them could be age 10 or 11. ‘Here’s your parcel of masala dosa, sir.’ The canteen boy placed the parcel in my hand. I took it and approached the girls. They were busy begging an old lady for something to eat. She gave a kind of disgusting look and scolded them for about a minute and then left. ‘What’s your name, dear?’ I asked one of them. She looked at me with a weird expression. I placed the parcel in one girl’s hand and was about to leave when second girl asked, ‘Mari naaku?’…
